PRIVATE 1-ON-1 STORY COACHING

You can write your stories and thrive.

I help dreamers, leaders, visionaries like you reignite their creativity, revive their energy, and make meaningful books that sell.

This is your invitation to enjoy writing again.

You know the books you’d love to write.

You’re giddy, picturing the people picking up your book.

You’re humbled, thinking about the lives you might touch.

You’re ready, perhaps already started, and yet the words won’t flow out of your head and onto the blank page glaring at you.

You tried Pomodoro techniques and various reward systems.

You tried critique groups, courses, cohorts, and conferences.

You tried what everyone else says works for them.

It’s time to do what works for you.

You have more than one story simmering in you.

Yes, I want to help you finish your book and get it in the best shape for what comes next: querying literary agents or self-publishing.

At the same time, I want to equip you with the skills, strength, and strategy needed to have a long and satisfying creative journey ahead.

To have a legacy and longevity.

Finish the book you’ve been meaning to write…and discover the stories you’re meant to tell.

In my private 1:1 story coaching container, we’ll spend 6 or 12 months together focusing on you and your process—how to make writing feel right for you—so that you can finish your books with ease and confidence.

How? We’ll use the Writer’s Compass, a framework I created to identify the four important directions of your writing and publishing journey and the skills and actions to develop in each. I created this framework because my clients had a vision of where they wanted to be but were unsure of how to get there.

The thing is there is no one right path to publication, especially in this fast-moving century. That’s why it can be so hard to take the first step, or even the next step, in writing your book. So instead of a map, I help clients understand the Writer’s Compass. That way, you’ll always move in the direction that moves you.

We’ll also cover the following:

  • What, where, and why something isn't working in your books — and how to make it stronger.

  • Understanding and demystifying the publishing process, so you can pitch literary agents (or self-publish) with confidence.

  • Compelling queries, pitches, and proposals — and which ones you actually need.

  • Who your market is, really, and what your readers expect.

  • "She helped me see what was valuable in all the chaos."

    • LaSonia Tiebi, content creator

  • “I didn't know what to expect when seeking a mentor, only that I was lost, and now I feel like I am on a path"

    • Daniel Burns, middle grade author

  • “Working with Sam is like therapy for creatives. I can finally find momentum and see the finish line."

    • Kelly Lan, founder of Hello Prosper

  • “Sam empowered me to really understand my process and creativity better."

    • Regina Linke, creator of Oxherd Boy

  • "I wouldn’t have been a published author if it weren’t for Sam’s guidance, knowledge, and expertise."

    • Sita Singh, picture book author

  • “When she was my agent, Sam's advice and guidance while crafting my middle grade book series was invaluable. Right away, I knew she understood my project and my creative goals."

    • Wes Molebash, creator of Travis Daventhorpe! and cartoonist

Is 1:1 private story coaching the right offer for right now?

Private story coaching is a YES if you…

  • Work and learn better in a safe, personal space to think out loud and process with someone you can trust.

  • Want to get out of the cycle of overthinking, researching, and self-editing.

  • Are ready to sort and expand on snippets of one (or more!) lingering ideas.

  • Can commit the time to finish what you started writing… or polish a completed one tucked in the shadows of your closet.

  • Feel excited about collaboration.

  • Are open to constructive feedback and open-ended questions.

  • See your books as part of a larger vision.

    • Real client examples:

      • “I want to build a world that inspires my child and readers all over to acts of love, compassion, and community.”

      • “I want to minimize the built-up of confusion for individuals living with a hyphenated identity by learning the stories of our ancestors and unlearning what is preventing us from loving ourselves.”

Private story coaching may NOT be for you if you…

  • Work and learn better in a safe community space where people in a similar journey can connect. (My upcoming group program, Authors Rising Club, is the better choice then.)

  • Dash breathlessly from new idea to new idea. (An upcoming offer, Shimmer + Simmer, could be the perfect fit.)

  • Want to pick my brain for just a day or an hour. (Book a VIP Day or a Clarity Call instead.)

  • Envision only one book in your future.

  • Have to overextend yourself in order to commit your time or make an investment.

  • Will use AI, or someone else’s words, to do 90% of the work for you.

  • Are not committed to diversity, inclusion, compassion, curiosity, and kindness.

Meet your story coach and writing mentor

Samantha Bagood

For years, I carried this thought of what kind of literary agent I wanted to be… an author’s sword and shield. I left my career as a literary agent in 2020, but that thought never left me.

Today, as a coach and mentor, I still want writers to have a champion in the book world. But they must champion themselves too. I’m here to equip you with the tools and strategy to do just that.

Sword - skills that you'll continually and consistently need to sharpen throughout your writing journey.

Shield - inner strength to face yourself, imposter syndrome, and the challenges of the publishing industry.

Strategy - deep understanding of how the stories you tell others intersect with the stories you tell yourself.

The specific skills and actions for each of these are identified in my Writer’s Compass framework.

It's true I'll help you write and finish your books. At the same time, I will support you. Empower you to have a long and successful writing and publishing journey ahead.

That's why I don't call myself a book coach.

The finished product isn't my focus.

You are.

It’s time for your stories. It’s time for you. Get started with 1-on-1 private story coaching. ↷

Questions & Answers

  • Not yet you aren’t. 😉 My clients tend to introduce themselves as business owners, designers, managers, or parents first. They say, “I’m not a writer but…” as if to warn me that they can’t really write a book.

Here’s the thing. You do not have to be “a writer” to write and publish a book. Wherever you are in life, whatever your identity is today, you can write. With good strategy, market understanding, and the right people on your team, you can also get your book sold and in front of readers.

  • I see your fear, and you are not alone. Here’s what I tell my son (and myself) about being scared: You have to be scared to be brave.

Look. I won’t deny when there’s room for improvement. I’m not going to be your Yes-Woman. However, it’s unlikely I will tell you something sucks. It’s not in my language. (I don’t even completely agree with the term ‘shitty first draft’, but that’s a story for another day.)

My purpose is not to point out what’s wrong. I’m here to help you find and realize potential. That said, you are not your book. You are not your art. No matter the genius idea (or not so genius idea) that’s residing inside your brain, you and your ability to change and create are boundless.

  • Absolutely. My clients come from all over the world, like the U.K. and Taiwan, and all over the country, from Pennsylvania to Georgia and the Midwest to Hawaii.

  • When I was a fresh-faced assistant at a literary agency, I learned the first of many valuable lessons: we don’t work with books. We work with people. I carried that lesson with me in the years after, and I stand by it today.

Story coaching focuses on you, your growth, and how you can bridge the gap between the stories you want to tell, and the stories readers want to buy. I bring my experience in the book industry and my discerning eye for incredible writing and storytelling.

In short, story coaching is my unique blend of industry insight and strategy, mindset, and creativity coaching.

  • Absolutely.

On one hand, here’s what I believe: when you enjoy the writing journey, your readers will enjoy what you finished writing…long after the last page. This is not to say that your writing journey will be effortless after working with me. The journey is long and circular with its own valleys and peaks. It is also, if you let it, transformative.

On the other hand, I spent years refining my ability to spot amazing writing and stories. I had to.

When I was a new literary agent, learning how to say no to good writing and good stories was so, so hard. Especially when I saw the potential for greatness. The thing is, with how much the world has changed and how fast it moves, there is less time, less flexibility, and less opportunities for literary agents to intimately work with and nurture writers….even when they really want to.

  • In an emergency situation (such as illness, injury, bereavement, natural disaster, etc.) then of course.

Or, if we've agreed in advance to adjusting the rhythm of our work or to schedule around things like your (or my) holiday, travel, vacation, rest periods, etc.

Let’s keep our communication open and transparent. When you work with me, you’re making a time and financial commitment to yourself. Same for me—I’m invested in seeing you grow, thrive, and finally write the stories you were meant to share.

So let’s be respectful of each other’s time and boundaries.

  • No. Many variables play into a literary agent's choice on whether or not to offer representation. (Same for an editor and publisher extending a book deal.) These variables can include, but are not limited to, the market outlook and agent's client list, wish list, and personal preferences.

For those reasons, I will not and CANNOT guarantee you will receive an offer of representation or traditional book deal after working with me.

  • Sadly, I cannot introduce every client I have to every agent I know. My reasons are similar to the reasons why I can't guarantee you'll receive an offer of representation or book deal.

  • Woohoo! After your payment is received and contract signed, you’ll receive a Welcome email with a link to schedule your kick-off call and a link to your Client Portal.

The writing journey is long, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.
